Air Tightness / Blower Door Test

An air tightness / blower door test measures the amount of uncontrolled air leakage through a building’s envelope, like walls, floors, and roof. It’s essentially a way to assess how well a building’s air barrier system is working and identify any leaks or gaps. This test is crucial for energy efficiency, reducing heat loss, and improving indoor air quality.
Under revised building regulations which came into force in January 2008, air tightness testing is mandatory for all dwellings. Further improvements to backstop performance levels have come into effect with the publication of the updates to the Technical Guidance Document (TGD) to the Building Regulations.
Energy Solutions Dublin provide a blower door testing service to both new and existing buildings.
All tests are carried out by NSAI certified testers in accordance with I.S. EN ISO 9972:2015
What is a Blower Door?
- A Blower Door is a device for measuring the "Leakiness" of your home.
- It is a calibrated fan that is mounted in any 1 of the external doors of your home.
- It works by temporarily lowering the air pressure in the home, so that the flow of air increases or is magnified through any leaks or defects in the structure.
- The Blower Door measures the "leakiness" of the house by measuring the flow through the fan, and the pressure difference between the inside and the outside of the house
